Questions as ARC begins

Use this thread (per Chris' suggestion) to ask and discuss questions you may have as ARC begins.

  1. I am a member of two elementary school PTAs as well as a member of the PTA Council. Many board members of the PTA Council have older children. The question was posed to me if I saw a need for SMARTBoards in the elementary school, in particular the kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms. I do feel that the SMARTBoard technology is very useful in these grade levels as long as the teacher is trained in the capabilities of the software.

When I went to the High School to shadow the math teachers, I saw the math teachers using the SMARTBoard extensively BUT I did not feel that they were using this technology correctly. Most of them were just using the SMARTBoard as a whiteboard or as a replacement of an overhead projector. These SMARTBoards are too expensive to use in this way.

I feel that you need to look at your lesson in a different way if you want to incorporate SMARTBoard technology to its full advantage.

My question to you is this:
If the teachers had the SMARTBoard, how did you see them using it? Was the SMARTBoard used as a replacement to the whiteboard or an overhead projector or was it used differently?

A good example of how the SMARTBoard could be used in my way of thinking would be to show the students how to use their calculators or to explain areas under the curve in Calculus graphically. In kindergarten, my son's teacher used the SMARTBoard to play games counting games and spelling/reading games.

  2. Folks:
FYI ... I had asked Randy if the Methods classroom would have overhead transparencies and pens that could be used as part of the Microteach 1 assignment. He indicated that those materials would be available.

That was the Q&A that I thought might be of wider interest and that a general Q&A blog thread might be a good place for such Q&As.

See you all Friday and Saturday!

  3. Thanks Chris for the suggestion and bringing up the materials issue.

Also, Jen asked about what to bring to methods. I suggest the following:
    *pen/pencil
*notebook to keep up with notes you might want to take and to store handouts
    *assignments that are due
*you materials and lesson plans for Microteach 1
*candidates often keep their text books in the car
*candidates often have a small cooler for their food, drinks etc.
*cookies to give to your instructors

  5. Click on "Print" in "File"
Click on white box below "print what:"
    Click on "handouts"
To the immediate right click on "slides per page" and choose how many you want (look at little icon to the immediate right to see layout
Below "handouts" in "print what" you can choose color or black and white

    Hope that helps

  6. If you get a chance, I would recommend seeing the movie Waiting for Superman. Very compelling.

  7. FYI-for those who need to get fingerprinted in Trumbull, they only do it on Wed & Thursdays from 2-330. The first appointment available is currently in January so you may want to check it out. They said that they are very swamped.

  8. Just in the last day I have seen ads for two teacher related shows - one called Teach on A&E with Tony Danza and the movie Waiting for Superman. Has anyone seen either of these?
