* Why you want to teach - I have concentrated on teaching children the last few years since my kids are so young and I found that I really enjoy the work. When I was working, I taught software classes to adults which I also enjoyed.

Current/Previous Profession - I've been working for 26 years in the Telecommunications industry as a systems engineer. I currently work at Sycamore Networks in Wallingford where I help design optical switching systems and the software systems that manage them for Mobile/Fixed Line Telecom Carriers, Cable companies and other companies (utilities, etc) that build their own telecom networks. My job is to turn market requirements into detailed system functional specifications that hardware and software engineers can build from.
Teaching experience: Beside doing some math tutoring with my kids and my wife (who attends community college), I've often performed training for customers, customer service, sales teams as well as other engineers. I also taught some introductory statistics and quality control topics at IBM back during my Master's program many years ago.
Why I want to teach - Like I think most engineers, I like to share information/knowledge with others. I also believe Math is great way for kids to learn how to think logically and such skills can pay off in many different ways, even if you don't want to be a mathematician, accountant or engineer. the idea of being able teach math not only seems very exciting and fun to me, but also very important.
Go Sox (well, at least maybe next year)!

I previously worked for Procter & Gamble for 24 years in various roles, most recently as a District manager in Pharmaceuticals managing CT/RI and MA. Our division was sold so I am now unemployed and lucky to have the opportunity to try something new. I have done training for our sales organization; coached soccer and worked with my daughter's first grade class on projects.
I would like to inspire and encourage students to have a passion for math.
Well the score is 10-7 and the Yankees are losing. UGH!

I work full-time as an analyst for a pharmaceutical/health care company, and I also work part-time as a tutor/teacher/trainer for a test prep company. Over the last year or so, I've realized that I would like to switch the roles of the two jobs I have: teach full-time and relegate the analytical work to a part-time or consultancy basis. Working directly with students is a rewarding experience that I would like to continue on an increased basis.
Sorry, but I'm not really a baseball fan!
Jaf suggested that we join NCTM. What level would be the most helpful to join? There is the email level or 2 different individual levels?

ReplyDeleteYes that was quite an evening meeting everyone and getting our first assigments. I was wait listed for the program and am very pleased to have been included.
I was formerly a sales engineer selling manufacturing equipment to pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic companies. It involved a great deal of educating new customers on how to improve their processes. Recently I had the opportunity to be a long term substitute, teaching geometry and pre-calculas. It was a very interesting time and I felt a change in career was needed.
I only become a baseball fan in the fall, so I don't have a favorite team.
Why become a teacher? Nothing beats seeing the light go off in the students mind when a new concept is understood.

ReplyDeleteI'm Jen Raymond and I live in Mystic, which is apparently a lonely corner of the state in this class of Fairfield county people!
I am currently employed for a local Hospital in the Finance department, doing analysis, budgeting, costing and reimbursement.
I have coached girls softball and I currently teach 7th & 8th grade Sunday School at my church.
I'm thrilled to be in this program! I want to teach because it's so much fun to interact with the students, figure out how they learn and be amazed when they "get it"!
And even though they are once again out of contention, my favorite baseball team is the Pittsburgh Pirates. Kidding, it's the Red Sox.

Hi Nadeen, in response to your question about NCTM, I would join at the student level. Unless you really have a lot of time to get into the academic journal on math education research, I would stick with the $39 level. Just my thoughts.

ReplyDeleteI'm Sandy Milardo and I live in Higganum with my husband, Mark, and two boys, Devon and Chad. The three of them are avid Red Sox fans and love to watch the Yankees lose.
I am an Accounting Supervisor at ING in Windsor. I have a BS in Accounting and a MBA. I am the manager of my son's soccer team and have volunteered in the classroom for about six years (when the boys were younger).
I have thought about teaching for some time. But I knew I would not have the time to get another degree. I first heard about this program five years ago, but as an Accounting major did not have enough math credits to apply. Last year I decided it was time for a change. I took two math classes at the local community college and here I am.
I would like to teach children to have a love of math. I want them to realize how math affects their everyday life. I'm hoping to teach 7th or 8th grade.

ReplyDeleteI’m Sharon Wynter who lives in Bridgeport. I was pleased to meet you all but must admit that I was surprised that our methods group was so small. Although I am personally pleased with that it’s no surprise as that is a representation of what would happen if you asked a high school class of students –how many like maths? I’d love to see that change in my lifetime and hope to be apart of the change.
Although I’m currently in the financial sector at Bank of America and before that I at worked at Sterling Capital Inc as a mortgage specialist, I spent many years life teaching in the Caribbean, high school math. I taught teenagers, segregated by ability levels but felt that there were better methods of doing things.

ReplyDeleteI'm Elizabeth McCartney, and I reside in Burlington, which is between Farmington and Torrington. I've spent most of my career in nonprofit management, marketing, and fundraising positions for Christian charities in NYC and Connecticut. In addition to my BA in math, I earned an MBA in management and marketing from NYU.
While I loved working in the nonprofit sector, I learned that it is difficult to help people become financially independent once they have reached adulthood. Hence, I'm hoping, as a public school teacher, to help students attain the direction and knowledge needed to make it on their own in today's society.
Like many of you, I have already attained a bit of experience in teaching as a bible education teacher to middle school students for six years and as a math tutor.
My husband is from PA, so I followed in his footsteps and become a Phillies fan about five years ago. As a New Yorker who lived less than 20 miles from the old Shea stadium for nearly 30 years, I was raised to be a Mets fan in the 1980's but lost interest in baseball after they won the World Series in 1986. It looks like I picked a good time to become a Phillies fan. Go Phillies!

ReplyDeleteLet's start blogging, as you can see this is the first time I'm blogging.
So my name is Ofer, it is an Israeli name.I'm in the USA since 1999, came to play soccer for Southern CT State University, graduate with computer science, didn't like it so I continue to study business and graduate with an MBA. I have been coaching soccer since 2000, boys and girls ages 4-21.
This is when I discovered my passion for training, teaching and helping kids to be better at soccer.
Now I want to do it in Math, the only subject i feel connected to. So I figured out that my passion is in teaching, and I'm pretty good teacher. Math is my favorite subject, so lets combine the two and CT will have a pretty good Math teacher.
I live in Fairfield and currently unemployed. Two months ago my company moved to MA, I was the logistics manager. Before that I was working for Tiffany & Co.
Baseball is not my favorite sport, but my roommate loved the Yankees so I always went with the Redsox.
To conclude this blog I will say that it is hard for me to understand how baseball is considered a sport.

ReplyDeleteIt was great meeting you all last week. Like many of you I am very excited to begin the program and get ready to be in the classroom.
I live in Salem (small town near New London)with my husband Bill and two daughters, Alexandra and Emily. For the past 8 years I've worked at Salem School as a tutor, last 3 as a middle school math tutor and I absolutely love that age group. Currently I am employed by the Lyme-Old Lyme High School as a leading tutor for the Learning Center, working with students of all grades and all academic levels. I love what I do and I enjoy the challenge. It is a very independent position, on a daily basis I see students from basic math classes all the way to pre-calculus.
As for sports, not much to report there... My family loves Red Sox if that counts!

ReplyDeleteHello Sharon- the TI84 is available at Staples and Office Max. Also, many schools have them for classroom use so if you are substituting you may ask the math department if you can barrow a calculator. Jim
ReplyDeleteThe calculator of choice for the vast majority of schools is the TI-83 or 84. Both work equally well given the functionality needed. The 89 is sometimes used but very rarely. Even at UConn, CCSU, and Manchester Community College the 83 and 84 are used in the classes.
ReplyDeleteThe next big thing in calculators will be the TI-N-Spire which is AMAZING!!!! A TI rep is likely to present a 1-2 hour session and you'll be blown away. BUT the N-Spire is very rarely used at this point. I'm hoping to give you guys a head start on how it works because many teachers will not have seen it first hand.
You'll get lots of practice using the 83-84 in Methods and most teacher candidates feel much more comfortable using it in due time.

ReplyDeleteHi Nancy, I think that maybe the SAT preparation books would be a good place to start. I'm thinking that you'll then be able to quickly pick out any area or areas you need to brush up on. Make use of your public library.

Nancy, in response to your review question, I got the test prep book for the Praxis. It's amazing! I goes over a lot of subject areas and even gives practice tests with answers and walk throughs on how to get the answer. Have you taken the Praxis yet? If not we should get a study group going for a review if anybody is interested.

ReplyDeleteA Praxis study group sounds good. I have to admit, I bought a study guide, but haven't had time for any studying. I was thinking of taking the first test cold to see how I fare.
ReplyDeleteMy understanding is that you can use your graphing calculator for this test (I didn't have to take it). We'll practice using the graphing calculator in methods. That's one thing that can help you with this test. I think the study group is a fabulous idea. If you have any stats questions feel free to ask.
